If you passed them on the street you might not even give them a second look, but here; |
Jean Lotus When Courney Love still wore a training bra, Mrs. Jean Teasdale founded Chicago’s legendary all-girl punk band, Barbie Army. Since then, she has been writing smart, catchy three-minute distortion-guitar songs influenced by the Ramones, the Raspberries, the Muffs, the Kinks and Billy Bragg. Over the years she has performed at big-time and small-time clubs in Chicago, Memphis, Nashville, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and London. Other bands she’s played in include the Pop-o-Wheelies and Fang Beach. Some of her more memorable live memories include: Alone with an electric guitar in front of 3,000 sailors at Great Lakes Naval Base; on Cricket Hill at the Peace Fests; Singer/songwriter nights at Avalon nightclub hosted by Jim Ellison, Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day on Navy Pier; Taste of Chicago and the Punk barf-boat tour on The Spirit of Chicago. While she’s never played blues music, Barbie Army provided punk rock comic relief during the 80s and early 90s for the patrons of many south- and westside blues bars such as The Sexy Kitten Lounge, the Cuddle Inn and Checkerboard Lounge, where Junior Wells asked her, “If there was a fight between me and a bulldog, who would you bet on?” (Whadaya say to that kinda question?) Today, she’s a proud mom and still writing lots of songs |

Julia Zap Meet Julia Zap! She is the newest and youngest member of the band and is quite happy to have been taken under the wing of these rock veterans. If you were ever in a dingy basement, loft, or dive bar in Chicago, or at Peace Fest; you may have seen JZap with Mattithias & The Stereo Expanders; providing back up vox, keyboards, bass and whatever other weird sounds they could think of, while preparing to graduate from The School of the Art Institute in May of 2006. Even though HeadSpins, is only her second band, Julia has been involved with musical and/or theatrical performances of some kind or another for her whole life. Is it in her blood? Or perhaps because her mother sang while performing daily tasks everyday since she was born, and there being a piano and a guitar in her house since she was 5, explains her love of music and performing. Although off stage she comes across as a bit shy, don’t be fooled by her reticent demeanor. On stage Julia’s formal voice lessons, 11 years of ballet training and willingness to get involved in every choir, school musical, or theater opportunity she could get her hands on for the past several years manifest themselves fully. In recent years Julia found that music was becoming more of a priority in her life, especially her fondness for playing the bass and writing songs. Her talents are not just limited to music, as she has quite a passion for fashion and art. She expresses these talents by drawing comics, painting, and sewing. Her influences range anywhere from Billy Holiday to The New York Dolls, Patsy Cline to The Ramones, Johnny Cash to Rancid, Ella Fitzgerald to The Sex Pistols and Bob Dylan to The Buzzcocks. Lastly, a note on her life philosophy: "Sex, Drugs, Rock N Roll? Who needs the drugs? Just give me the Sex and Rock N Roll!!" |

Mike Pappas Mike has been at it in one form or another since 1974. A veteran player with focused dedication, you might ask? Or just a slacker with not enough brains to quit. If the peter principle ever applied to anyone it certainly applies to Pappas. He started out on 12-string trying to emulate David Bowie and winds up 30 years later, pounding the tubs behind anyone fool enough to let him, while trying to sound like evey drummer he's ever heard; ever in his life, all at once. A lack of clear direction or has A.A.D.D found its poster child? Perhaps, but one thing is for sure if he hasn't quit by now he must have a real passion or is in total denial.Music hasn't been Mike's only creative outlet. He's been a haircutter and colorist for 22 years as well as a published commercial photographer and webmaster for several current websites including this one. Mike has played in an array of local bands since 1988. Some never even left the rehearsal space, while others had limited success. Yet through it all, whether playing guitar/bass/drums for racially mixed southside R&B/Blues bands; Reggae with northside Rasta wannabes; or Rock N' Roll with blue collar rednecks, he has managed to maintain a broad appreciation for all musical styles throughout his incredibly fortunate musical experiences. |
